The chapter 8 of Understanding by Design written by Wiggins presents us ideas that should be considered as primarily when evaluating students’ performance. To use criteria means that students have to be evaluated according to their range of performance and not to expect that they can do something that is out of their abilities.
The first idea that we could see as necessary was the fact of using an appropriate criteria or rubrics when evaluating. It is important that students can feel confident, thus, performing anything appropriately. The great problem that wigging highlighted in the chapter was teachers paying attention to unnecessary aspects. To avoid this, it is essential that teachers pay interest in quality of something instead of quantity.
Using criteria where students can demonstrate that they really acquired the knowledge is our second idea. A rubric or a criterion that focus on application of understanding is more valuable and important. It indicates that students are prepared to go the next step in the cognitive development.
Finally, we got to the idea that it is important to create rubric base on the performance students had before. Therefore, teachers can see or have in mind the probably success of students. It is helpful for teachers because they can see how they increase their understanding. Even more, it helps you to see how well are you improving in your lessons.

You explained this chapter very well. I understood the importance of rubric in the assessing process. It is important to have a rubric based on what we need to assess from students in order to know how well they apply what they learn.
ResponderEliminarIt seems to me that you went straight to the point, it is very easy to understand and very clear!
ResponderEliminarI totally agree that is important to highlight the fact that sometimes teachers spend many time paying attention to unecessary points rather than identify quality.
I think that using appropriate criteria and rubrics makes more valid the assessment procedure. At the same time, it guides you in what important things you are going to assess and how quality becomes much more important than quantity.
ResponderEliminarA fundamental point when students are learning is that they have to be aware of their weaknesses and strenghts. Rubrics and criteria aimed at this purpose, however, it is as well as fundamental, what teachers include in the rubrics, what criteria. These have to be very well specified in order to be a helpful for students to make progress.
ResponderEliminarWhen we use criteria we have to be focused in what are we going to really assess and it is important to teach necessary things and not topics which are adding more ideas but less understanding.
ResponderEliminarI think it's so important to follow a criteria previously created, and make students achieve the goals they need to in order, as you say, to go the the next step in the cognitive development.
ResponderEliminarEvaluating students’ performance is not as simple as giving a test, we have to consider some other aspect such as commitment or class participation. Nevertheless, many teachers nowadays are paying attention to unnecessary aspects instead of the good ones.
